Prof. Koen Martens is Head of Research of the Royal Belgian Institute of natural Sciences (Brussels, Belgium), guest professor at the University of Ghent (Belgium) and invited professor at the University of Maringa (Brazil). His research interests are in aquatic ecology and evolutionary biology,
especially in the field of speciation in ancient lakes and the evolution of
asexual reproduction, and in the taxonomy and ecology of non-marine
Ostracoda (Crustacea).

Godelieve Gheysen (PhD in Sciences) is full time professor at the Faculty of BioScience Engineering at Ghent University, where she heads the Department of Biotechnology and she also is director of International Plant Biotechnology Outreach. Her expertise is plant molecular biology and biotechnology, including science communication to the public. Her research focuses on the molecular analysis of interactions between plants and pathogens and the use of molecular breeding and biotechnology to improve plant resistance to biotic stress. G. Gheysen has an h-index of 44, with 164 a1 publications.

Het Pand

En esta edición de Sinapsis contaremos con un auditorio con mucha historia, el Het Pand, un antiguo monasterio de los Dominicanos localizado en el corazón de Gante a orillas del río Leie, al lado del Puerto medieval y sus remanentes.
Un poco de historia
Het Pand empezó funcionando como un hospital en el año 1201. En el año 1225 se el hospital trasladó a otro edificio y ese mismo año los primeros Dominicanos llegaron a Gante. El año 1228 es considerado oficialmente como la fecha de establecimiento del monasterio. En años posteriores se desarrollaron una serie de infrastructuras aledañas, entre las cuales resalta la librería.
En tiempos de conflicto (1556 d.c.), los Calvinistas la utilizaron como universidad tras la toma de Gante. En 1796, luego de la Revolución Francesa, el monasterio fue clausurado y vendido en pequeños lotes. Los sacerdotes fueron capaces de recuperar el edificio con la ayuda de agentes inversonistas, para nuevamente ser forzados a venderlo en 1823 bajo orden del Papa Leo XII.
Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Het Pand pudo haber sido demolido. Fue entonces que el Comité Administrativo de la Universidad de Gante decidió adquirir el edificio. Convencidos de su valor, la transacción tuvo lugar un 25 de Enero de 1963. Es desde entonces que la Universidad realizó grandes esfuerzos de restauración para convertirlo en uno de los pricipales centros culturales el día de hoy. Los trabajos de renovación duraron desde 1971 hasta 1991. En la actualidad el edificio alberga oficinas administrativas, un resturante, varios salones de conferencia y areas verdes.
